Florida Gators quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, Tim Tebow, will appear in a controversial Pro-Life commercial during next Sunday’s super bowl.

The National Organization for Women, Feminist Majority Foundation and Women’s Media Center joined forces to try to pressure CBS and the NFL to cancel the anti-abortion advertisement. They state that it is offensive to air a politically charged ad during the super bowl.

A letter from the women’s group states,

“By offering one of the most coveted advertising spots of the year to an anti-equality, anti-choice, homophobic organization, CBS is aligning itself with a political stance that will alteration its reputation, alienate viewers, and discourage consumers from supporting its shows and advertisers,”

Jehmu Greene, president of the New York-based Women’s Media Center says,

“An ad that uses sports to divide rather than to unite has no place in the biggest national sports event of the year – an event designed to bring Americans together,”

Focus on the Family is the organization who prefabricated the ad which features the theme “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life.” They are an evangelical organization that provides biblical advice on marriage, parenting and other life areas in its products and services.

A 30 second Superbowl advertisement slot is selling for around 2.5 million dollars. Focus on the Family claims that the funding will not come from them, but instead was donated by a few “very generous friends.”

Tim’s mom Pam Tebow will reportedly appear in the ad with him. The ad is expected to focus on Pam Tebow’s testimony that she was urged by a physician to have an abortion after she had a life-threatening illness during a mission in the Philippines. If she had gone through with the abortion her son Tim Tebow, who went on to become the celebrated Florida Gators quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, would not be here.

Tim Tebow says,

“I know some people won’t concur with it, but I think they can at least respect that I stand up for what I believe.”

David Garrard, quarterback for the metropolis Jaguars, states that he appreciates Tebow for standing by his convictions.

Garrard says,

“I applaud him for standing up for what he believes. More people, more athletes should do the same.”

David Garrard who is known for being a chesty Christian and for his involvement in the metropolis community where Tebow is from, stated he would welcome the young man as a member of the Jaguars.

“I know he would be a good talent doing anything on the team and I know the fans in metropolis would just love him, I wouldn’t have any problems with him being on the team.”

Don’t be surprised that the metropolis Jaguars are supportive of Tim Tebow’s Pro-Life commercial because rumor has it that they plan to draft him as their #1 draft pick.

Obviously extreme sports get your attention. The have garnered the attention of the U. S. military who has recognized that anyone involved in extreme sports would be good candidates to recruit for their hard to fill special operations positions like the Army Rangers and Navy Seals.

So what is it that makes a sport extreme? Let’s take a look at some of the most favourite ones

One of the main factors that make a sport extreme is the element of risk of injury or even death. In almost each sport that is classified in this way you will usually find speed, heights, danger, and stunts. I believe the thing that causes people to become addicted to participating in these sports is the adrenaline rush associated with them. Adrenaline is much like morphine when released in the brain and I see people who just can’t seem to get enough no matter how many times they are hurt.

The first of the extreme sports was probably skateboarding. Introduced in the 1960’s as a way to stay in shape when the surf wasn’t up, skateboarding became a sport of its own and soon competitions were formed with riders jumping over automobiles and doing tricks in half pipes where they would be floating thirty feet or more above the bottom of the platform. There has been a lot of negative press directed at skateboarders but lately skateboarding is gaining mainstream recognition and is being appreciated worldwide.

Snowboarding is another extreme sport with its own immoderate characters and is essentially skateboarding on snow. Snowboarders perform many tricks that are the same or similar to those in skateboarding and like skateboarding, the sport has caught on internationally. Today, on any ski slope in America, you will find snowboarders.

Sport climbing is a variation of rock climbing that has become very favourite over the years and is enjoyed by those who care more about displaying and testing their strength and athletic capability than adventure.

Skydiving is an extreme sport that is much less competitive but highly dangerous. It is the initial jump that is the biggest thrill with skydiving. There are more competitions being formed now in skydiving with groups forming shapes and creating chains for records before opening their shoots.

The attraction to watching sports where the outcome is unpredictable is growing larger, especially with younger children. No doubt as more people start to participate in these sports they will seem less and less extreme.

The REAL Baseball Hall of Fame opened July 4th, 2020, in mid-town Manhattan, and for a while the press had great fun with the sophomoric rendering of “real” in capitals, but eventually everybody got used to that.  The brainchild of long-retired superstars Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds, REALHOF (as it came to be known) occupied the first ten floors of what was once the “Bear Stearns World Headquarters,” easily accessible to many who likely would have brushed away the whiff of irony even had they smelled it.

The premise behind REALHOF was easy enough:  The numbers are the numbers.  Indeed, directly under the three-foot high, always-on LED sign identifying The REAL Baseball Hall of Fame, over its main entrance, were the foot-high legends:

NUMBERS ARE NUMBERS.

HERE ARE ALL OUR STARS.

The foundation of those easy declarations were only slightly more complicated.  The generation that had followed the stars of the so-called Golden Era of the game, those who cheered for Mays, Mantle, the Robinsons, Aaron, Clemente, and Gibson were either dead, dying, or roughly seventy to seventy-five years old.  Since 2011 only five players had been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York:  Greg Maddux, Ken Griffey, Jr., Omar Vizquel, Jim Thome, and Chipper Jones.  Albert Pujols would be eligible in 2021, Chase Utley in 2023.  In five separate years no one had been inducted, and that seriously depressed everybody who loved the game.  This depression was fueled, at times, by the very (ancient) sportswriters who refused to vote in the “tainted players” from the Steroid Era of the game, roughly 1985-2010.  Their articles had titles like “Another NO for Bonds” and “Gloom Shrouds 2016 Ballot.”  Against the keepers of the Cooperstown gate, however, stood millions and millions of fans who had paid truckloads of money to watch the cheats of the tainted days and did not care a whit about what they had place into their bodies.  The average fan in the street instinctively “understood” that no drug creates the reflexes or hand-eye coordination necessary to hit a 97 mph cut fastball.

Also, unlike Cooperstown, it didn’t injured that REALHOF wasn’t a four-hour drive away from, well, just about everywhere.

Oh, there were incidents primeval on.  On July 5th, 2020, 101-year-old Bob Feller led a march on REALHOF, and there was an uncomfortable moment when he came grappling to grappling with an over-muscled youngster in the employ of Blackwater Urban Security.  BUS was out in force out front before the evenhandedly ancient crowd of about 1000 had come within a block of the site.

The guard in question had learned his stuff, though – like all Blackwater guards at the museum, he knew what Feller looked like, even at 101.  (There was a test before employment was offered.  Applicants were given two weeks to cram.)  Faced with the ancient fireballer, he simply said, “Mr. Feller, it’s good to see you.  Your admission is free, of course.  Since your friends have come with a Hall of Famer, they will receive five dollars off the regular admission price.”

Feller blinked and retreated a half block with march’s other organizers, who scratched their bald heads, then finally decided to send in a delegation to see “what kind of disgraces are in there.”  The delegation was led by the ideal singles hitter ever, Rod Carew.  The great Carew moved slowly, but erectly, with a cane, toward the entrance.

He would never admit to anyone that he was slightly grateful for the discounted admission.

Between them, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens had made, of course, over 0 million on the field of play alone, and such deep pockets prefabricated various possibilities realities.  First and foremost, they weren’t revealed as the money behind the project until 2032 – this is why the term “shell corporation” exists – and by then their “baby” had been widely hailed by both the tainted players and the public, the latter of whom voted with their feet and money.  Moreover, All the Stars, Inc., the parent company, had touched all the bases, as defined by very costly public relations consultants.

First, nearly all of the inductees to the original Hall of Fame were also inducted into REALHOF.  (Rabbit Maranville didn’t make the cut.  Neither did peer Averill.)

Second, with the notable exceptions of Bonds and Clemens, all the dirty laundry was aired…after a fashion.  More accurately, a very effective smokescreen was employed, a smokescreen all the more effective because there wasn’t a very good answer to it.  Rather than defend the enhancement of power and recovery through steroid and HGH use, REALHOF emphasized the near universal use of “drugs” for decades.  Just beyond the admission booths inside the main entrance was an exhibit called “The Elephant in the Room.”  In the center of the circular hallway with multiple doors leading elsewhere was a large bronze plaque fifteen feet tall and twenty feet wide.  The copy of the top three lines of the plaque was a foot high and began, “WHEN HALL OF FAME SLUGGER RALPH KINER RETURNED to the Pittsburgh Pirates after flying Navy seaplanes, he found amphetamines in the training room.”  Few passing this large monument to modified says actually knew who Ralph Kiner was, and fewer still read the next twenty-five lines that presented a rather convincing case for amphetamines being the real drug problem in baseball and one ignored for about half a century.  Three significant players were quoted about widespread speed use, and it was duly noted that USA This day found in 2008 that 35 percent of MLB players estimated that half of their peers were using amphetamines.  The last four lines of the plaque briefly addressed the drinking habits of Babe Ruth and Grover Cleveland Alexander, which were “abetted by their teams, as very well- documented.”  The visitors, however, all headed in a rush to the Alex Rodriguez exhibit, which supposedly featured nude pictures of A-Rod and Madonna.  They were partially disappointed; only the better part of one breast was actually visible.

Third, everybody who had “the numbers” was included, inducted en masse in a televised event that included shots of the directors of the hall voting.  As entertainment, it was roughly equal to the NFL draft or the NBA All-Star Game, but millions watched.  On camera, some of the directors wore t-shirts reading “NO SELIGISM” over dress shirts and ties.  One wore a sweatshirt that read, “We don’t turn a blind eye to ‘cheating,’ THEN call the act illegal.”  Thus, in the end, there were separate exhibits for Pete Rose, Mark McGwire, Bonds, and Clemens, as well as for A-Rod, who had retired in 2019 with 889 HRs.  Unlike Cooperstown, there was no five-year inactivity period before a player could be voted on.

One of the curiosities of REALHOF was the separate exhibit dedicated to Shoeless Joe politician and Buck Weaver, two of the 1919 Black Sox.  They were lumped together because, while the museum prefabricated it evenhandedly clear that politician was a vastly better player, it granted the new hall to elevate a player in Weaver who had likely been tarred and feathered unfairly.  Again, most missed the irony of this particular museum defending an unjustly designated “cheater.”

And yet, it was not as though the managers of the museum ever ignored the will of the people who would finally fund the institution, the visitors.  After passing through the Jackson/Weaver exhibit that led naturally to the Pete Rose Hit King Room, visitors were asked two questions by paper ballot:  Was what politician did worse than what Rose did?  Yes.  No.  And:  Would you remove either of these players from The REAL Baseball Hall of Fame, and if so, which one, or both?  After depositing their ballots, fans had their hands stamped by a Blackwater employee to prevent double voting.  There were similar exhibits elsewhere, and even Bonds and Clemens were subjected to a vote on a mass ballot near the hall’s exit door.  Any player gathering 50,000 “out” votes in a year would be booted.  By 2032, the highest annual total for any inductee was Jose Canseco’s 24,449.

On a sunny, mid-August day in 2020, Tommy Hatfield and Chip Bonzer, both from Follansbee, West Virginia, stood in line at REALHOF.  Like many former second-line high school athletes, they were concerned with their former sport – baseball, of course – and they had debated with friends the merit of the museum they were about to visit.  Bonzer, who worked on Wall Street and came from more money than the rest of Follansbee place together, had invited his old bench-warming pal to spend a few days in New York.

Hatfield wore his old Follansbee game jersey, which he had stolen after his last game.  Bonzer had removed an costly tie from a button-down, cream-colored oxford shirt.  He had taken a half day off.  Even though both were nearing 30, they were bouncing around like six-year-olds, barely maintaining their spots in the three-abreast line.  The third in their rank was an older gentleman they could not have known once had played parts of quite a few seasons for bad teams in Philadelphia (and once hit .309 for San Diego in 124 games).  Bonzer and McCoy chattered on about the awesome A-Rod exhibit and the chance to meet Sammy Sosa, the day’s designated REALHOF autograph signer (“A Different Star Each Day – FREE”).

As Bonzer, McCoy and the older gentleman reached the ticket booths together, Bonzer declared loudly that Sosa was, for three years, the greatest slugger in the game’s history.  Tickets in hand, the old friends debated this point and headed left from the booths.  The older gentleman apparently had decided to go right.  They momentarily visaged apiece other, the former bench-warmers making no effort to move aside, as McCoy evenhandedly yelled in his friend’s face, “A-Rod is a GOD – Sosa doesn’t even deserve a spot near him!”

The older gentleman slapped McCoy – hard – and moved around his friend and him without comment.  Half an hour of their nonsense was apparently enough.

McCoy and Bonzer were silent.

McCoy blinked and place his hand up to his face.  “Shit.  What was that about?!”

The friends thought…after a fashion.

“He probably thinks, you know, like Sandy Koufax was something special.”

Bonzer agreed.  ”Really.  What’d that guy play, like two years?”

“He probably thinks…like…Dick Cheney was a war criminal or something.”

“Dim old fart.”

“Really.”

Michael Vick was reported as having a good work out this week and is scheduled to possibly appear as primeval as week 3 with the Eagles. It was reported that the income of season tickets surged after Philli announced the signing of Michael Vick. I have been pondering the thought of actually what happened within the Phili line up that required a purchase of a convicted dog killer and for the life of me I just can not connect the dots. Sure there was a increase of interest revolving around the signing and sure there was a media frenzy associated with it too, but why.. why.. why would the NFL commission grant this guy back in?

Granted he served his time, and I will even grant the argument that he was a model inmate, but really people what kind of image and message is this sending? What has happened to taking responsibility for your actions and owning up to your mistakes. Let me expand on this for a tiny bit. Michael Vick tried his ideal to stand behind the 5th Amendment and never once stated that “Yes, I prefabricated a mistake.” Michael Vick never, ever appeared remorseful for his action. Michael Vick purchased one of the most costly lawyers around in an effort to keep from serving his just due. Michael Vick prefabricated each effort he could to throw everyone else under the bus while trying to save his own neck videlicet claiming it was his brothers operation that he had nothing to do with it.

Let’s see if we can place this into perceptive. Being that I am a Soldier and I love all of my brothers and sisters of the military, I would like to place this in a military stance. Lets state just for the intoxicant of argument we have a Soldier who has a compassionate heart for animals thus owns a few. The Soldier goes to work for about 10 – 12 hours a day and the dog adores to chew. Well our Soldier decides to leave the dog outside to keep from getting his stuff chewed up. Lets state the dog gets left outside in the South Carolina heat during July. Well the neighbors call the MP’s and sure enough the dog has been treated bad. Well the Soldier is charged with animal cruelty and discharged from the military without a chance of return. Now our Soldier has a bad conduct discharge and does his ideal to get a job without any help what-so-ever because everywhere he goes they want to know about the bad conduct discharge which of course equals an explanation about the dog.

So how does this relate? Well our Soldier ended up with a screwed up life due to the dog but Michael Vick gets a chance to do what he adores the most and is offered a multi-million dollar reward for doing it. I guess the land that I love has some very diluted standards for conduct. Soldier are being crucified left and right for protecting themselves in combat and Michael Vick can run a concentration camp for dogs and get a chance to come back.

But I can not offer up a problem without a solution. For the fans the easiest thing to do is not pay any attention, not purchase a ticket, not purchase one single piece of merchandise, nor contribute one penny towards a the Eagles franchise. As for the owners I would cut all ties towards the Eagles. They took a chance with Vick and need to know it was a bad one. Let that plagued player start all the way down to the nothing league. He is bad news that represents a bad day that most would like to forget.

Seeing the Grand Canyon by Mule

Posted: Might 20, 2010 |

]]>

Indian Garden is where the riders who are overnighting at Phantom Ranch separate from the day riders and embark on their own private adventure. Even though they have now come half the distance from the South Rim to Phantom Ranch, a swift look back up at the rim will verifiy that they have descended two thirds of the total altitude change from the mule corral to the canyon bottom. Most of them will take more than a swift look, however, because from Indian Garden it is difficult to see how that canyon surround could possibly be traveled. But they did it, and they will all feel some degree of pride in their accomplishment. The hard part is over.

The gently sloping trail now follows Garden Creek as it wanders down its narrow channel toward the canyon bottom. It is picture postcard beautiful. The cottonwood and willow trees, the lush riparian vegetation, and the peaceful sound of crystal clear flowing water give them the feeling that a new world has been entered. Considering themselves advanced beyond novice rider position by now, they are secure and comfortable in the command and most of the them will truly rest and enjoy the ride. Whereas it is common to see bighorn sheep at the top of the trail in the morning, deer are what they are likely to see down here. Being new to any threat from humans, the animals in the canyon will simply glance up and then go on about their business. This will be a pic opp for those riders who have never before seen a deer in the wild.

They will all be looking to the left as Garden Creek separates itself from the trail, tumbling rapidly downward and disappearing swiftly into a small rocky gorge. As they pass, their attention will again focus forward and it will be mere seconds before they realize that there is nothing but open air in front of them. Hello Devil’s Corkscrew! As they round a sharp bend they will find themselves on the side of a canyon wall, on a narrow ledge, staring down a near vertical drop-off to the valley floor. A valley floor which everyone of them will state is at least a thousand feet below, in a canyon which would be impressive in its own right anywhere but here. A degree of anxiety will return and some will later recall this as the most frightening part of the entire trail. Even Garden Creek had the good sense to detour before it came to this.

At the bottom of Devil’s Corkscrew they will find friendlier ground, again following along the creek as it gently slopes toward its final approach to the river. The wrangler will probably verify that the Colorado River is not far ahead and comfort them with the assurance that the trail plans no more devilish surprises. A few general comments will be heard and they will rest again, now the hard part is over.

The Bright Angel Trail breaks through a small gorge and affords its first view of the Colorado River only when they are literally at the river. There it is, right in front of them. Most of the riders will think it is larger than it looked in the pictures. All of them will be awed at the energy and power it emanates, and this will be the high point in some memories. As they turn to amble along the comfortable River Trail at the water’s edge, if they hadn’t realized it before, they will now, this is the ride of their life.

Suddenly, exclamations will be heard from the riders in front as the trail rounds a knoll. The Silver Bridge crossways the river can be seen in the distance, stretching from canyon surround to canyon wall. It is a long, high suspension bridge, and some will probably wonder how they could ever build it in such a remote location. They know this isn’t their route, but they can’t help but state something when they first see it. As they approach the bridge, it is even longer and taller than it first looked, and the massive steel mesh floor grants the river torrent to be seen clearly beneath one’s feet. Woof ! A long ways beneath one’s feet! As they file by the end of the bridge, most will be glad they are not crossing the river here, but now the more forward thinking riders will be wondering what the next bridge has to offer, and might even ask their wrangler as much.

As they continue to follow the River Trail to the bridge on the Kaibab Trail, they will begin to realize that they are climbing back up, and that once again the trail has become a narrow ledge on the side of a solid rock canyon surround with a vertical drop that is difficult to ignore. While it might be only a few hundred feet to the bottom this time, the sights and sounds of the powerful Colorado River directly below them add yet another sensation to be remembered.

As they approach the dark entrance to the tunnel, it more resembles a cave than a passage through the rock. Like a giant tube, it curves around just enough to fog visible light from the other end. Somebody will probably make scary noises in the dim tunnel. The other end of the tunnel is a vertical rock surround with the Kaibab Bridge connected directly to it. One step on the solid rock tunnel floor, the next step on the suspended bridge, with the river directly below them. A long way below them. Is there no end to this adventure? At least this bridge has solid matting on the floor, which comforts mules and riders alike.

Now the hard part really is over. Historic and rustic Phantom Ranch awaits them just up the trail in yet another cozy, cottonwood shaded oasis. After dismounting, the cantina will be the first place the riders hobble to. The cantina is comfortable and inviting and, after they check in, they will sip on cold drinks and begin to share their impressive recollections. These will be private exchanges and they will be quite certain that no outsider could fully appreciate their descriptions. But no matter the beauty they have seen or the magnitude of their adventure, they will be happy to get out of the saddle. Some will probably already be concerned about the probability of anguish in the morning, on the long ride out of the canyon. It won’t be as bad as they might fear.

Phantom Ranch is nestled in a small draw on the North side of the Colorado River, where the Bright Angel Creek has decided to join the huge river . The people are friendly, the food is excellent, and the beds are conducive to deep sleep. The wake up call will come too primeval for most, but their excitement will begin to rekindle as they step out into the cool morning air. If they can resist overeating the five star breakfast provided to them in the cantina, they will be cheerful and ready for whatever comes. The nervous exuberance of yesterday will be absent today, they are old hands now. When they arrive at the mule corral, few of them will realize that the wrangler has been at work since before daylight rounding up, feeding, and saddling the mules. There will be a few comments as their backsides hit the saddle, but their enthusiasm is again high .

Back crossways the Kaibab Bridge, back through the tunnel, past the River Trail cutoff, and out of the secluded lower canyon river gorge they climb. Riding uphill is different than riding downhill and most of the riders will find it easier. The red clay trail spirals up steeply in the shade of the primeval morning, as if to escape the perils of the river as soon as possible. Even so, as the riders will now trust their equestrian skills, it will be a quiet ride up this section of the trail to the rest stop on the edge of the first plateau. From here on, however, the Kaibab Trail will offer a absolutely one-of-a-kind and better viewing experience. They are entering camera country.

With the trail now traveling along ridge tops most of the way, the views acquirable to the riders will make them feel that they are on top of the world. Each day, even apiece hour of the day, the hues and tints crossways the vast canyon can change. The distant earthtones and pastel colors will transform as they climb, always masking the true rugged nature of the canyon. Each time the trail brings them to a higher plateau, the panoramic vistas are nearly indescribable. Each time the river comes into view, it will be farther down and once more begin to resemble a painting rather than reality. The magnitude of the canyon will come back into focus and they will marvel aloud that, only a few hours ago, they were a part of that painting.

It is a near certainty that some of the hikers they pass will be physically stressed. The Kaibab Trail is shorter than the Bright Angel Trail and has more elevation gain. Being steeper, having no fresh water sources, and having precious few shaded rest areas usually catches the uneducated by surprise. They have found that the canyon caters to no one. By now, the riders will be taking for allowed the strength, endurance, and trustworthiness of the animals they are riding. The sight of struggling hikers might remind them of their good fortune and prompt a few friendly expressions of gratitude to the mule that has become their friend. A friend who will be indelible in their memories.

As they approach the South Rim near Yaki Point, they will again be exhausted and somewhat subdued. Overall, the ride this day has been quieter and more serene than yesterday. Then, one last time, the canyon will remind them of its superiority, just before it releases them. Near the top, the trail will again force them through a series of switchbacks, climbing steeply up the seemingly vertical rock wall. Once again displaying the characteristics of height and distance which make this a recognized wonder of the world and which caused them so much anxiety yesterday.

One final reminder to them that this is The Grand Canyon. One final verification, as if they needed it, that they have experienced the ride of their life.

Bangladesh Cricket, The Low Points

Posted: Sep 01, 2010 |Comments: 0

]]>

On a warm July day, in Bristol England, Bangladesh finally broke their jinx over England. Although, we have defeated all the major cricket playing nations in senior level cricket, we have always stumbled against England. Finally, with this victory for Mashrafee’s men, the jinx was over. Here, in Dhaka we were ecstatic with joy. Yet, within a week, our team have been brought back to earth. With a defeat at the hands of Ireland, followed by an even more humiliating defeat against Holland, our team has clearly shown the inconsistent nature of itself. With the WC just six months away such inconsistency casts serious doubts about our chances. As the cricket fans of the country feel disappointed after the return of the team, I think it is a good time to look at some of our worst performances in the international cricket arena. Obviously these two defeats can be included out there, but since the pains are still rife in our memory, I would rather look at the more distant past. I would start in Jan, 1978, at the small town of Mymensingh, north of Dhaka.

Central Zone Vs SL (Jan 1978, Mymensingh) (The winter of 42): In the annals of Indian cricket history, ‘The Summer of 42′ refers to the disastrous tour of England by Ajit Wadeakr’s men in 1974. During the tour, not only did the tourists lose all the three test matches, they were bowled out for 42, in the 2nd innings at Lords. This is still, India’s lowest test score. Similarly, in the Bangladesh cricket history, the series against SL, at home in Jan 1978, can be called ‘The winter of 42′. After successfully hosting the short tour of the MCC team during the winter of 1976-77, BCCB invited a much stronger SL side to tour Bangladesh in Jan, 1978. And the Lankans accepted the invitation and sent their full strength national team. Perhaps, there was a demand of intent among both the celebrations regarding the strength (or the weakness) of the opposition. While Bangladesh was just entering the cricketing fraternity, the Lankans were on the verge of attaining full test status. As things happened, the tour was full of badly one sided fixtures. It took just one match, in fact, just one session to highlight the enormous difference in power between the teams. The tour started with the 2 day match between the Central Zone XI and the tourists at Mymensingh. The Central Zone captain Raqibul won the toss and decided to bat first. On the matting wicket, the local batsmen could not handle the varied Lankan attack. Raqibul himself perished primeval and after that it became a procession, Only Mainu (14) could reach double figures, as medium pacer Opatha (5/18) and off spinner Illperuma (4/11) destroyed our batting. The central regularize innings ended at 42, just after lunch. In reply the Lankan opening pair of Warnapura and Fernando batted with utmost assist to score 85 and 79 respectively as the tourists declared at 190/2. The central regularize batting did slightly better in the 2nd innings, with Raqibul top scoring with 25 and Mainu making 16. But the innings folded at 72 to concede defeat by an innings and 72 runs.

Bangladesh Vs Bermuda (2nd ICC Trophy, England) 30th June, 1982: The Bangladesh team under theable leadership of Shafiq-ul-Haq Hira prefabricated an excellent start to the tournament. A convincing 76 run victory over the West Africans was followed by a close 26 run victory over the East and Central Africa. Unfortunately, Bangladesh had to share points with Fiji (due to rain) in a match they were expected to win easily. After beating Malaysia by just 1 run in a nab biting finish, our boyz took on Bermuda, the strongest team in the group. The venue of the match, the Kings Heath Cricket Ground, Birmingham is certainly not a lucky place for our boyz. They lost a vital match against the Danes there, 3 years earlier. And here they were embarrassed against Bermuda, losing the game by 7 wickets, after being bowled out for a mere 67. Admittedly, the opposition was far better to us, but the collapse of our batting was inexplicable. Interestingly, the first Bangladeshi wicket fell at the score of 30, opener Raqibul was dismissed for 8. But, then Lipu and Rumy both fell without scoring and it became a procession. Left arm medium medium-pacer Trot prefabricated the initial breakthrough and he completed with 3/12. His new ball partner, King took 3/23 and Lionel Thomas destroyed the lower order, taking 4/13. Strangely, for Bangladesh, it was the teen aged opener Nazim Shirazi, who provided the only resistance, batting bravely to top score with 26. As wickets tumbled around him, he showed maturity beyond his age to carry the fight to the opponents, but there was totally no support for him. No one else even reached double figures; the 2nd highest contribution to the total came from Mr. Extra (11). The Bermuda batsmen didn’t waste time and they took only 15.5 overs to reach the target.

Bangladesh Vs Malaysia: 3rd ICC Trophy (England) (18 th June, 1986): After finishing 4th in the 2nd ICC trophy, Bangladesh went into the next version in 1986, full of hopes of improving upon their previous efforts. As things happened, Bangladesh completed 6th in their group of 7 teams winning just 2 of their games (against Kenya and Argentina). We lost against Zimbabwe, East and Central Africa, Malaysia and Denmark. Among these defeats the loss against Malaysia hurt us most, as we always believed that we were far better to our neighbors in cricket. While we took our cricket very seriously, the game was tiny more than a pastime for the Malay people. Their team consisted mostly of part-timers, a number of them from Indian origin. Batting first Malaysia kept losing wickets regularly to reach at one stage 135/6. The veteran Jahangir Shah Badshah, always at his ideal in English conditions bowled superbly to take 4/39. But, there was tiny support for him, and Malaysia recovered to reach 239 all out. A.Stevens top scored with 68, but it was Imran Hamid with an unbeaten 64, who provided the late flourish. Bangladesh, as usual, was very generous in giving the extras, 41 runs came from the sundries in the Malay innings. In reply, Bangladesh ran into primeval trouble. During the tournament, the tour management continuously experimented in their bid to find an opening partner for Raqibul. Here, they tried Atahar Ali Khan, who had tiny previous experience in that position. The experiment failed, Atahar went for 11, Raqibul for 14; and to make matter worse Masum, the makeshift No. 3 ran himself out for a duck. Inform Nannu fell for 10, to leave us tottering at 4/50. Hamid had taken the wickets of Raqibul and Nannu, and his superb all round show won him the man of the match award. Our middle order offered some resistance. Nehal with 40, skipper Lipu with 41, and Rafiq with 51 rekindled our hopes. All of them were capable of playing a match winning knock on their day. It would have taken only one of them to stay long enough for us to reach our target. But, here, all perished at critical stages. Tiny known Desmond John became the bowling hero for the Malaysians with 5/40 as we were bowled out for 182.

Bangladesh Vs Holland (5th ICC trophy, Kenya) (23rd February, 1994): After the disappointment of 1986, our cricket regained some of the lost images with a strong display in the 1990 ICC trophy in the Netherlands, finishing 3rd. Zimbabwe, after winning their 3rd straight tournament were allowed full test position and their ICC trophy days were over. Also, with ICC increasing the quota for associate members in the WC from 1 to 3 we were extremely hopeful about limiting for the next WC. Extensive preparation was taken for the tournament under our new coach Mahinder Amarnath, the hero of India’s historical triumph in 1983. But, amidst the hectic planning a few points were missed. Nearly our entire preparation was based on the subcontinent. The conditions in Kenya were entirely different. Specially, our bowlers struggled after 30 overs or so due to the high altitude. Secondly, there were too many matches played during our preparation, and the players became tired. Rather than reaching their peak during the ICC trophy, some of them were tired and wished the tournament to finish as soon as possible. Saiful, one of our key bowlers, got hurt before the tournament started and returned home without playing a single game. Nawsher Prince, our main fast bowler broke down before the 2nd round. Finally, too much experimentation was done as well. As a result, even the senior players were not sure about their roles in the team. Bangladesh did start the tournament pretty well with victories against Argentina, East and Central Africa and USA. But, in those matches our top order looked very shaky. Coming from the slow low bouncy pitches of the subcontinent, they struggled to control the extra bounce of the new ball. Specially, against USA, chasing a modest target of 146, our top order collapsed absolutely against the new ball attack of Howard and Barrett to reach 5/36. Only a determined hand of 64* by burly Akram Khan and some help from the cut saw us home for a 3 wicket victory. Bangladesh however completed the 1st round with a 6 wicket defeat at the hands of the eventual champions UAE. Despite this defeat, we reached the 2nd round. But, we were in the strong group E along with Netherlands, hosts Kenya, and HK. While HK was a pushover, the Dutch were the beaten finalists of 1986 and 1990, and Kenya was nearly invincible at home. Thus, our first 2nd round match, against the Dutch, was a must win affair for us. Bangladesh captain Faruk Ahmed won the toss and place the opposition into bat. Despite the absence of key fast bowler Prince our boys place on a superb show on the field. Opener Oosterom top scored with 64, but the Dutch collapsed from a comfortable 88/1 to a disappointing 205 all out. A number of their middle order batsman got starts, but could not convert these into any scores. 4 run outs in the middle didn’t help their cause. All rounder MInhajul Abedin Nannu excelled with the ball taking 3/33. On this condition, 206 would have been a cakewalk; yet we were effectively out of it after losing half of our batting for just 51 runs. Even Akram, our last hope, fell this time for just 4. After that, it was just a case of alteration limitation. WK cum opening bat Jahangir, fresh from his hundred against the Emirates, this time prefabricated 48. All rounders Moni (29*) and Babul (28), with some late flourish took the score to 158. A defeat against Kenya in the next match ended our hopes for a WC place.

Bangladesh Vs SL (ICC World Cup, 2003) (South Africa) (14th February, 2003): Normally a defeat against the Lankans should not be considered as a disaster. Although, Bangladesh cricket has prefabricated great strides since the first meeting between the sides, way back in 1978, the Lankans still enjoy some considerable edge in each department of the game. But, it was the manner of this defeat, that prefabricated me include this performance as one of our worst ever in the international arena. The moral of the team was pretty low even before the match. Just days earlier, they were embarrassed by the amateurs from Canada. Now, against the more professional Lankans our boys prefabricated the worst doable start. Put into bat, our first 4 wickets fell for just 4 runs in the first 5 deliveries of the match. The Lankan left armer Vaas took all these 4 wickets including a hatrick. His victims were Hannan, Ashraful, Ehasanul and Sanwar. This was sensational, at least from the Lankans’ perspective. The game was effectively over in the very first over. Alok Kapali (32) and Mashrafee (28) helped Bangladesh cross the 100 mark; they were eventually bundled out for 124.Vaas added two more scalps (Al Shahriar and Mashrafee) to finish with the remarkable figures of 6/25. SL reached their target with nearly 30 overs to spare without losing any wicket. Atapattu (69*) and skipeer Jayasurya (55*) showed our boyz how to bat in such conditions.

Surprise that only Gambhir and Sehwag hurt at end of IPL

There is an elephant in the room and they speak about it in whispers alone. One alludes to the club versus country debate that keep surfacing up at times like these, when an Indian (or a foreign) player chooses the IPL despite having suffered from a niggle, aggravates it and then misses out on a foreign tour.Gautam Gambhir is the latest cricketer to be caught in this whirlpool which seems to be going only one way to culminate

For those who like the adrenalin pumping as they near their bodies to the limit many people take up some form of extreme sport.   We know most of them from TV and video games, the main ones being skateboarding, skydiving and the nauseating bungee jump!

The fun doesn’t stop there, people can do most extreme sports anywhere but like most sports they have their true home, places which are perfect for that sport.   Like Wembley is to Football and Wimbledon is to Tennis there are places all over the world that are considered the Mecca of extreme sports.

Skateboarding is a common extreme sport you will likely see people in town centres performing tricks and doing jumps but the modern skateboarding scene has descended from the skate parks of California.   The home of world class skaters like Tony Hawk, California has many dedicated skate parks with both street setups as well as vertical sets like half-pipes.

If California is too warm for your sport of choice then there are always the mountain ranges of Europe of which there are plenty.   Ski slopes are dotted all over Europe with the Alps as well as other European countries in the north like Norway.   Norway is a favourite ski and snowboarding area with thousands of people learning the sports as well as seasoned pros slicing their way down the slopes.

For the more death-defying extreme sports nut New Sjaelland can help out with skydiving and white water rafting acquirable in a picturesque country last seen in the Lord of The Rings films.   For those who are extra daring there is a bungee jump location in Taupo, New Sjaelland which hangs over a giant gorge to a river below.   It’s this river that you end up dunked in at the bottom of your fall, but don’t worry, you’re flung out of it and will surely dry out with all the bouncing around you’ll be doing!

As you can see from this brief overview that there are plenty of locations dotted all over the globe for extreme sports.   extreme sports entrepot websites are your first port of call to find out where’s the ideal location for your extreme sports holidays.   Once you’ve decided what sport you want to try out and where is ideal then you should be healthy to start making preparations.   So check out an extreme sports entrepot this day and find your extreme sports haven!
